THE LORD'S SUPPER, A SIGN OF GOD'S LOVE
Scriptures
John 3:16
Main Scripture: John 3:16
BIG IDEA
The Lord's Supper is a sign of God's love: it shows his sacrifice, his provision, his fellowship, his gift of eternal life, and our hope for the future.
KEY SCRIPTURE
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his beloved Son, that whosoever believes in him shall never perish but have everlasting life.
INTRODUCTION
Whosoever, that is, everyone who believes in him, will not perish. The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are saved (Proverbs 18:10). But until you surrender your life to Jesus, you are not a believer.
The Lord's Supper is a sign of God's love. Let us look at five reasons why.
MAIN POINTS
MAIN POINT 1: IT SHOWS GOD'S TRUE LOVE THROUGH SACRIFICE
Explanation: To believe, you must be willing to sacrifice certain things. God sacrificed first, so he knows how it feels to give. Imagine you are asked to give everything you have today. It may even mean that a relationship must be sacrificed in order to dine with God.
We were all sinners, but partaking in the Lord's Supper means that God has forgiven us. It shows God's mercy, which we do not deserve. He paid a debt that he did not owe.
Illustration: Let us assume a young man owes 5,000 GHC and cannot pay. All of a sudden, someone appears and pays it for him. What will you do for the person who paid? That is what Jesus did for us.
Application: Let us run to the throne of grace with boldness, so that we shall obtain mercy (Hebrews 4:16).
Transition: God's love is shown in his sacrifice, and it is also shown in what he gives to sustain us.
MAIN POINT 2: IT SHOWS GOD'S PROVISION
Explanation: God has given provisions to sustain you.
Transition: Having provided for us, God invites us to sit with him.
MAIN POINT 3: IT IS FELLOWSHIP
Explanation: I want to be like you, Jesus, so I will fellowship with you.
Illustration: In the Jewish tradition, if the head of the family gives you food and you refuse to eat it, it means you are not satisfied.
Illustration: In Europe, a person sentenced to death is granted a last wish. One asked to swim in the sea. One asked for a chilled beer. One asked for holy communion. Even though he was condemned, this man believed that after taking the Lord's Supper he would be with God.
Transition: This fellowship with Christ leads us to the greatest gift of all.
MAIN POINT 4: IT GIVES ETERNAL LIFE
Scripture: John 6:51 - I am the living bread who came from heaven, and whosoever eats this bread shall live forever.
Explanation: You cannot have eternal life unless you partake with Christ. Jesus is assuring us that even when we die, we will live again. If you want to see him, walk with him and die with him, then you must dine with him.
Testimony: I know I will see Jesus, for I have dined with him every month.
In the Apostolic Church, we believe the marriage supper of the Lamb will take place (Revelation 19:9), but not everyone will go.
Transition: Because of this promise, we do not face death without hope.
MAIN POINT 5: IT SHOWS HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
Explanation: Yet though I die, there is hope. The Lord's Supper gives you hope for the future.
Question: Have you dined with me on earth? If the answer is no, you will be dragged to hell.
Application: Living for God means you carry the cross of Christ. Do something for Christ.
CONCLUSION
The Lord's Supper is a sign of God's love. It shows his sacrifice for us, his provision for us, his fellowship with us, his gift of eternal life, and his hope for our future. Until you surrender your life to Jesus, you are not a believer. Dine with him on earth, carry the cross, and do something for Christ.
