Peer Pressure and Staying true to your values - Part 2

Message notes and ministry archive

OPENING NOTE

We are not here by accident. God has kept us alive by His grace, and with that grace comes responsibility — the responsibility to live differently, to stand firm, and to stay true to who God has called us to be.

Last week we established that peer pressure is real, it is powerful, and it can come from anywhere — family, friends, or the circles we find ourselves in. Today we go deeper. The question is not just whether we should resist peer pressure. The question is: how do we practically live and stand when pressure comes knocking at our door?

When we want to evade bad peer pressure, we must look up to God — the One who sees, and the One who rewards in the end.

We will look at some Bible characters who faced tremendous pressure and chose to stand. Beginning with Daniel — whose pressure did not come from friends, but from a higher authority.

HOW TO OVERCOME PEER PRESSURE — FIVE PRACTICAL STEPS

ONE — DECIDE YOUR VALUES IN ADVANCE

The time to decide who you are is not when the pressure arrives. It is long before that moment comes.

Obey the good things you have learnt from family. Hold onto the right values that have been passed down to you. There will be situations where your family is not there, where no one who knows you is watching. And in those moments, the only thing that will hold you is what you have already hidden in your heart — the Word of God.

The generations of today are struggling to stand firm when pressure — what we call asuohyie — comes. Not because they are weak people, but because they have not decided in advance. Decide now. Before the moment comes.

TWO — CHOOSE YOUR INNER CIRCLE WISELY

Proverbs tells us: walk with the wise and you will be wise. The company you keep shapes the person you become — whether you are conscious of it or not.

As a believer, you may already see the character of a friend and know it is not right. Yet you remain in that circle. You cannot keep associating with what you know is pulling you in the wrong direction and expect to remain standing. Choose your friends wisely. Your inner circle is not just social — it is spiritual.

THREE — PUT PRAYER IN YOUR LIFE

Without prayer, no one can stand. It is that simple.

We live in an age where social media has become the bible for many. Gadgets are not bad — but as a child of God, you must know how to use them. If you are spending hours on your phone and minutes — or none at all — in prayer, you are not building the kind of foundation that holds when pressure comes.

Be prayerful. And when you pray, do not just talk to God — wait for God to talk to you. A prayer without a reply is an incomplete conversation. Be still enough to hear from Heaven.

FOUR — BE READY TO STAND ALONE

When you decide well, be ready for the consequences of that decision. When you stand out, you will be called all sorts of names. You will be labelled. You will be tagged as different, as strange, as “Colo.”

That is the cost of integrity. Pay it. Because the reward on the other side is far greater than the discomfort of standing alone in the moment.

FIVE — SEEK GOD’S APPROVAL

We are not here to follow the crowd. We are here to wait upon God.

When you are rooted in the Word and you pray, make sure you are also listening. It is always good to talk to God — but it is even more important to hear from God. Seek His approval over your decisions, your relationships, your direction. When God approves, no pressure from man can ultimately prevail against you.

BIBLE CHARACTERS WHO STOOD FIRM

DANIEL

Daniel 1:8

Daniel decided in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s food. In a world where the lines between believers and unbelievers were being blurred, Daniel drew a clear line. He refused to compromise his identity.

Daniel and his friends also knew the importance of prayer. They were not just religiously committed — they were practically prayerful. Prayer was their daily reality, not just their emergency option.

Here is a question worth sitting with: if your Bible fell into water and your phone fell into water at the same time — which one would you save first? The answer says a lot about where your priorities truly are.

JOSEPH

Joseph knew what it meant to face temptation when no one was watching. Potiphar’s wife presented herself to him. He was alone. There were no witnesses. In that moment, many would have given in.

But Joseph decided not to disobey God. He ran. He did not negotiate with the temptation — he fled from it.

Men are running after women. Women are running after men. And some are giving themselves away for things as temporary as a phone or a gift. When no one is there — what will you decide? Let Joseph’s example be your answer.

NOAH

Noah lived in a generation that was completely corrupted. The whole system around him had collapsed morally. But Noah decided to stand for God — alone if necessary.

The system around us may be corrupt. But we are not called to infuse ourselves into that corruption. We are called to be in the world but not of it. Like Noah, we can be surrounded by compromise and still choose righteousness.

WHY WE MUST HOLD TO TRUE VALUES

BECAUSE WE KNOW OUR GOD

All these Bible characters were able to stand because they knew who their God was. If we want to stand, we must remain faithful. If we want to be recognised as children of God, we must be loyal to Him. We must live to please Him — not people.

BECAUSE OUR INTEGRITY IS WORTH PROTECTING

Your integrity is not just a spiritual matter — it has real, practical consequences. The decisions you make today about who you associate with, what you give yourself to, and what you compromise will follow you.

Do not give your best years and your purity to something or someone that will cost you your dignity later. Protect your integrity now. You will be glad you did.

HOW TO REMAIN TRUE TO YOUR VALUES — PRACTICAL STEPS

BE ROOTED IN YOUR IDENTITY

In Christianity, there are levels. Are you just part of the crowd, or do you know who you are in God? Know whose child you are and walk accordingly. You are a chosen generation. That identity must govern how you speak, how you dress, how you carry yourself, and who you allow into your life.

Let no pressure uproot you from that identity.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE RIGHT COMPANY

1 Corinthians 15:33 — Bad company corrupts good character.

As they say in our language: fa nnamfoɔ pa na wɔn suban aka wo — keep good friends and their character will rub off on you. The reverse is equally true.

DEPEND ON THE HOLY SPIRIT

You cannot do this alone. The Holy Spirit is not a religious concept — He is a practical, present help. Lean on Him. Let Him lead you in the moments when the pressure is greatest.

STAY ANCHORED IN THE WORD OF GOD

Jeremiah 8:9 — Those who have rejected the word of the LORD — what wisdom do they have?

Nyame asem na wapo yi, wonyansa wɔ he. If you throw away the Word of God, where will your wisdom come from? Stay in the Word. It is your anchor.

REAL LIFE — THE PRESSURE IS PRACTICAL

At your workplace, when your boss steps out — what do you do?

As a student in an examination hall, when the invigilator is not looking — what do you do?

When it comes to substance abuse — do not let anyone deceive you that alcohol or drugs will bring you wisdom or peace. They will not.

When it comes to sexual immorality — do not be deceived that giving yourself away is the price of keeping a relationship. Any relationship that requires you to compromise your purity is not worth keeping.

Some are even recording themselves doing immoral things just to get views and validation online. Do not go down that road.

And in everyday integrity — if you would lie on a phone call about where you are, even something as small as claiming you have reached Makro when you can still hear the conductor announcing it — that is the seed of corruption. It may seem small. But character is built in the small moments.

Audience praying accordingly

CONCLUSION

Remain righteous. God rewards those who stand.

Like Noah — do not be corrupted by the system around you.
Like Daniel and his friends — refuse to compromise, no matter who is asking.
Like Joseph — run from temptation, especially when no one is watching.

These were not extraordinary people. They were ordinary believers who made extraordinary decisions. And God showed up for every one of them.

You are a chosen generation. Walk like it.

CLOSING PRAYER

Father, thank You for Your Word. Lord, the pressure is real — we feel it every day. But Your strength is greater than any pressure this world can bring. Help us to decide our values now, before the moment comes. Help us to choose the right company, to pray without ceasing, and to seek Your approval above all else. Root us in our identity as Your children. And when we stand alone, let us know that You are standing with us. To You be all the glory. In Jesus’

name. Amen.
